You can think of Deputies as having three distinct roles. You’re a member of Parliament (in the States). You’re a policy-maker (on Committees). And you do constituency work (helping people one-to-one). Each of these is an important part of the role.
Of the three, constituency work is the least well-defined role – every Deputy approaches it differently, and has their own rules about what they will and won’t do. The next few posts look at the kind of issues you might be asked to get involved with, and the kind of rules and boundaries you might want to set for yourself in order to treat your constituents with dignity, to safeguard yourself and your family, and to do no harm.
