Jackie Weaver is coming to Guernsey!

Jackie Weaver,  became an internet sensation during lockdown for her firm handling of an online parish council meeting that had descended into bullying and chaos.

She now appears regularly in the media and has her own podcast (@jackieweaverpod).

Join Women in Public Life at the Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 15 September at 7pm as we find out more about the woman behind the Zoom screen and her ‘plain old common sense’ advice, including how to assert yourself in the workplace and how to take charge of your life. In return, she explores the quirks of Guernsey, including what on earth a Douzenier and a Deputy are.

Jackie is Chief Officer of the Cheshire Association of Local Councils and is keen to encourage everyone to get involved in local democracy, at whatever level suits them. She is also is an Ambassador for Compassion in Politics.

After the event, Jackie will be signing copies of her brand new book “You Do Have The Authority Here – What Would Jackie Weaver Do?”. This is a special privilege for Guernsey as the book isn’t officially released until 16 September. Price £10.99.

Miriam Makeba - South Africa

Zenzile Miriam Makeba (1932 to 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist. Associated with musical genres including Afropop, jazz, and world music, she was an advocate against apartheid and white-minority government in South Africa. In 2020 she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 women of the century. 

South Africa is ranked 12th in the world for percentage of women in national parliament: 45.8% (source: data.ipu.org)

Jacinda Ardern - New Zealand

Jacinda Ardern (born 1980) has served as prime minister of New Zealand and leader of the Labour Party since 2017. In 2019, she led the country through the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque shootings, rapidly introducing strict gun laws in response, and throughout 2020 she directed the country’s widely praised response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ardern was the world’s second elected head of government to give birth in office when her daughter was born in 2018. ‘An inspiring Prime Minister who brought a nation together with true leadership, empathy and compassion.’

New Zealand is ranked 4th in the world for percentage of women in national parliament: 48.3% (source: data.ipu.org)
