Jurat David Mortimer is retiring at the end of the year so there will be a Jurat election on 25 January 2023. The official nomination period is now open and closes on Friday 6 January.
You don’t have to wait to be tapped on the shoulder, you can put yourself forward for the vacancy by contacting the Bailiff’s Office on 226161. Most Jurats are retired but it is possible to combine your duties with employment, so long as your job is flexible – Jurat Joanne Wyatt does (video).
Our Jurats are trusted by the community to decide serious court cases. There’s plenty of information about the role on our website. Jurat Stephen Jones is always happy to speak to anyone who may be considering standing either now or in the future – however tentatively – as are we at Women in Public Life.
It’s important that Jurats come from all walks of life. Jurat Margaret Spaargaren sadly died this year and her Press obituary speaks of her leaving school at 14, studying to become a social worker and then taking on numerous leadership roles in the voluntary sector after she retired.
